Individual
Wellbeing Diagnostic Laboratory Genova Diagnostics
This information is correct as at January 2008
IWDL
Genova have very generously offered a discount to any new autism spectrum
disorder patients who order the full profile as below. The usual retail
prices are given and you will see that the discount allowed is very generous
indeed. This only applies to patients who order the full profile; if the
tests are ordered individually then they revert back to their retail price.
The majority of these tests are required by practitioners following the
biomedical programme.
Information
about some of these tests can be found on my website www.nutritional-therapy-online.co.uk
or explained in Jacqueline McCandless' book "Children with Starving
Brains" as recommended on this site.
IWDL/
Genova Changes
IWDL are
very excited to announce a new partnership with Genova Diagnostics, one
of the largest functional medicine laboratories in the world. Genova are
in many ways pioneers in the field of functional medicine, and have performed
over 3 million individual diagnostic tests.
This will
benefit both practitioners and patients considerably, as we are able to
introduce more comprehensive and scientifically advanced profiles. This
partnership will also ensure IWDL are able to build on their reputation
for excellent practitioner and patient support, as well as offer faster,
more efficient testing as more testing is performed in the UK. Both laboratories
are committed to meeting the highest professional standards and extensive
certifications require both IWDL and Genova to adopt the most stringent
Quality Assurance protocols.
Biomedical
Profile Number 1
Although
the DAN! Profile remains largely unchanged and still includes the Food
Allergen Cellular (FAC) Test; Gluten Sensitivity Profile, Kryptopyrroles,
Histamine, Hair Mineral Analysis, and Secretory IgA - it also now includes
some improved profiles as described below:
Biomedical
Profile Number 2 Non Bleed
- ONE profile (first morning urine Organic Acids, Amino Acids, Lipid
peroxides and new oxidative damage marker, 8-OHdG).
- CDSA + P 2.0 stool analysis.
- Kryptopyrroles.
- Porphyrins.
- Hair Mineral Analysis.
- Secretory IgA.
Total Price: £600 (total
saving of £100 compared with ordering tests seperately)
Allergy Testing (FACT)
Although certain foods, including gluten and casein, can cause severe
adverse reactions in many children with ASD, there may be other foods
that these children can't tolerate that may remain unidentified. These
may produce mild symptoms that are not easily attached to any one food,
as symptoms of food intolerances can often be delayed. Testing for food
reactions can help identify other problematic foods, and reduce strain
on digestive systems of these kids.
The FACT test measures approximately 150 foods for intolerances as well
as a measure of total IgE antibodies, which can help alert you to the
possibilty of food allergies as well as intolerances. See below links

Genovations Autism Profile
The Autism Genovations Profile offers predictive genomics profiles that
help to evaluate carefully selected genetic variants that provide a previously
'unseen 'glimpse' into an individual's potential future health.
Genetic differences can often confer certain advantages or disadvantages
towards health, in a given environment. The Genovations Profile helps
to evaluate those genetic variations or 'SNPs' that are modifiable through
diet, lifestyle and specific nutrient supplementation.
This can allow the practitioner to develop a treatment programme that
can potentially reduce the risk of certain 'negative' genetic variations
to develop, by using very precise, customised interventions. In a complex
condition such as Autism, the Genovations Profile can also help to inform
the practitioner which specific areas are likely to need monitoring or
further investigation.
SNPs measured:
- ApoE: Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) plays a key role in lipid metabolism
by helping to remove dietary cholesterol from the bloodstream. This
can influence the risk for cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis,
myocardial infarction, stroke and osteoporosis. These multifunctional
receptors, known to regulate cholesterol transport, and becoming increasingly
interesting to the neuroscience community due to their ability to transduce
a diversity of extra cellular signals across the membrane in the adult
Central Nervous System. In addition, genetic, biochemical and behavioural
studies have implicated these signalling systems in a number of human
degenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders involving the loss of cognitive
ability, such as Alzheimers disease, schizophrenia and autism. The presence
of the two cysteines in APO-E2 are capable of mercury binding and therefore
mercury removal from the Central Nervous System. APO-E4 differs from
APO-E2 in that these two cysteines have been genetically replaced by
arginines that have no mercury binding activity.
MTHFR: Polymorphims of this enzyme can disrupt the metabolism of B vitamins
(including folic acid), potentially leading to a build up of homocysteine.
The presence of these SNP's can increase the risk of cardiovascular
disease, blood vessel damage, thromboses, stroke and degenerative ageing.
MTHFR is a key enzyme that can facilitate remethylation.
COMT: Polymorphisms of this enzyme may lead to impaired metabolism and
impaired deactivation of certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine,
epinephrine and norepinephrine, various chemicals and toxins which may
predispose someone to bipolar disorders, ADHD and alcoholism.
IL-1B: This gene affects the duration and intensity of the inflammatory
response. Polymorphisms can increase the level of inflammation, which
is associate with the aetiology of the autistic spectrum disorders and
also increase the susceptibility to Helicobacter pylori infection.
-
VDR: Impairment of the Vitamin D receptor can cause resistance to Vitamin
D, leading to impaired calcium absorption, increased bone loss, lower
bone mineral density, and enhanced bone lead accumulation. Vitamin D
receptor (VDR) is an intracellular hormone receptor that specifically
binds the active form of vitamin D and interacts with target-cell nuclei
to produce effects. Interacts with calcium levels, so important in ASD.
Functional Vitamin D Receptor gene polymorphisms may influence modification
of cell growth, protection from oxidative stress, cell-cell matrix effects,
or insulin and insulin-like growth factor pathways; they are associated
with several immune-related diseases, and VDR and vitamin D itself modulate
T cell differentiation. Variants of the VDR have been found to be associated
with immune-mediated diseases that are characterised by an imbalance
in helper T-cell development, such as Crohns and tuberculosis. The results
of several studies identify VDR variants as genetic risk factors for
asthma and allergic diseases.
-
GSTM1 & GSTP1: Glutathione (GST) detoxifies many water-soluble environmental
toxins, including solvents, herbicides, fungicides, and heavy metals
including mercury, cadmium, and lead.
